Without Henry Cavill: I'm already fed up with the new Superman

It's almost like a running joke. New “first pictures” of various important characters from the new Superman film appear every day. In the future, however, the Marvel competitor will have to make do without Hollywood megastars such as Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot or Jason Momoa.

After numerous bad flops at the box office, Warner (Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, The Last of Us, Game of Thrones) pulled the plug on the DC Extended Universe. Marvel legend James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) is now responsible for the (almost) complete reboot and Superman: Legacy is the first film of the comprehensive reboot, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 10, 2025.

Who stars in the new Superman movie?

One thing is already clear: Director James Gunn is going all out and introducing a seemingly overwhelming number of characters in Superman: Legacy. I collected Batman and Superman comics as a child and teenager and still feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of film characters and am already fed up with the film.

Just to illustrate, numerous characters have already been revealed in secret photos from the filming, including:

  • Superman – David Corenswet
  • Lois Lane – Rachel Brosnahan
  • Clark Kent – also David Corenswet
  • Rick Flag Senior – Frank Grillo
  • Ultraman – unknown
  • Engineer – Maria Gabriella de Faria
  • Cat Grant – Mikaela Hoover's
  • Ron Troupe – Christopher MacDonald
  • Skyler Gisondo-Jimmy Olsen
  • Wendell Pierce-Perry White
  • Lex Luthor-Nicholas Hoult

But beyond that there are more charactersthat we haven't seen yet. For example:

  • Green Lanterns – Nathan Fillion
  • Hawkgirl – Isabela Merced
  • Metamorpho – Anthony Carrigan
  • Lex Luthor's accomplice Eve Teschmacher – Sara Sampaio
  • Ma & Pa Kent – Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell

and finally House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock as Supergirl. I see a huge problem coming for the new Superman.

The reboot of Marvel competitor DC has to be a success with the first film. If Superman: Legacy flops, it could be a much bigger fiasco than with the old DCEU, when numerous heroes like Black Adam with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, The Flash or Blue Beatle failed miserably at the box office. However, I have my legitimate doubts as to whether Superman can be a success without Henry Cavill.

Will the new Superman without Henry Cavill be a flop?

Firing a fan favorite is rarely a smart move. Every new picture of the new Superman is already being met with rejection, malice and ridicule on social media. In my humble opinion, it is also smart to fire the first film of a superhero as an origin story rather “small”.

This gives you time to calmly tell the backstory of the new Superman, carefully build an emotional connection with the audience and leave room for escalations in subsequent films. Instead, filmmaker James Gunn seems to have succumbed to megalomania.

Many fans' hearts melt when they see Lois Lane and the new Superman.

Placing such a mass of characters in a single movie can only be achieved by MCU with the Avengers after years of preparation with over 20 movies. With Superman: Legacy it seems as if James Gunn totally out of control He simply put everything that has been accumulated in the comics over several decades into the film. He is doing neither himself nor the new Superman any favors, and least of all the audience. I have already surrendered.
