Why was the single-player DLC canceled? Former employee provides the answer

The story DLC of “GTA 5” was canceled, which was the subject of a conversation with Rockstar camera artist Joseph Rubino. He blames a cash cow for this.

“GTA 5”, which was released in 2013 and for two further console generations, was once supposed to be expanded with a story DLC. But after 180 million sales Single player players will miss out. The plans for the add-on were stopped long ago.

There is a reason for this, as former Rockstar camera artist Joseph Rubino claims. In a conversation with the operators of the YouTube channel SanInPlay (via VGC) he named as a culprit.

Cash cow prevented story expansion

According to Joseph Rubino, the “GTA 5” expansion fell victim to the success of “GTA Online.” Monetizing the multiplayer component became a cash cow, so Take-Two poured the resources into the live service.

In a conversation with SanInPlay, Rubino said that he was involved in the canceled Trevor DLC. In addition, data miners had found references to two other DLCs entitled “Zombie Apocalypse” and “Alien Invasion.” The zombie appearance in particular brings back memories of a popular DLC from “Red Dead Redemption.”

“That was kind of my thing. I was one of the main editors, cameraman and did a lot of second unit on stage. [Dann] we split our teams into two, so I stayed with GTA Online and this DLC, where [Trevor-Darsteller] Steven Ogg was a very important part. And finally, part of the team overlapped and went to Red Dead Redemption 2 early,” Rubino began his statement.

Later, the success of the online component became clear. “It was such a box office hit and people loved it so much that it was hard to find an argument that a standalone DLC could outperform the game,” he continued.

Details about the Trevor DLC emerged last April:

Let's finish this shit

Looking back, Rubino would say they could probably do both, but it was a business decision made at the time.

The former employee added that he was “a little upset” about Rockstar's decision. He thought at the time: “Yo, what the heck, guys, this shit is awesome, let's keep going, let's finish this shit.”

Instead, Rockstar had continuously expanded the online component of “GTA 5” with story-based content and shortly before the “GTA 6” launch is not over yet. However, the latest update also raised fears that monetization will be pushed further:

There is no exact date for “GTA 6” yet. However, Take-Two and Rockstar Games are officially planning a Launch in autumn 2025.
