ViewSonic VX2428J review – A very good 1080p gaming screen for small budgets

Today, the largest PCs allow most large games to be played at 1440p or 4K with very good performance, especially thanks to resolution upscaling technologies such as NVIDIA’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR. However, there are still plenty of gamers with modest setups who can enjoy the latest games thanks to the magic of 1080p. Today, we present to you a gaming screen dedicated to this resolution, the ViewSonic VX2428J.

We were able to test it for almost two weeks with a very satisfactory result.

Design

Unlike a ViewSonic ELITE XG251G that we tested last year, the ViewSonic VX2428J focuses above all on small budgets. Sold for around €165, it is an affordable product focusing exclusively on performance. Don’t expect a flashy shape. The design is quite simple, but we appreciate the thin edges which give a little elegant touch.

Please note that the installation is simple. Four screws to install to secure the screen to the base and that’s it. The whole thing is sufficiently solid.

On the other hand, it is surprisingly very flexible with a left/right rotation of -15°/+15° and an inclination between -5˚ and 20˚. You can even use it as a vertical screen since it can be rotated 90°. In terms of connectivity, we are dealing with the bare minimum with two HDMI 1.4 sockets, a DisplayPort 1.4 and a 3.5 audio port.

Regarding menu navigation, going back hurts a little. Recent models generally favor the use of a small, fairly practical stick. Here, we return to the combo of not very ergonomic buttons. Don’t expect RGB either because there simply isn’t any. The ViewSonic VX2428J is a 1080p display aimed at pragmatic gamers who want to pay for performance alone and fortunately it doesn’t disappoint in that department.

Performance

The gaming screen offers everything you would expect from a high-performance monitor for comfortable gaming at 1080p, whether for solo games, but also competitive games such as FPS. We thus have a 24.5-inch Full HD screen with a response time of 1 ms. Regarding the type of panel, we are on an IPS panel which offers better color accuracy and better viewing angles.

Generally, a 144Hz screen is the minimum required when you want good experience in this area and the VX2428J can boast a refresh rate of 165Hz. Ideal for having a smooth image in competitive shooting games such as Call of Duty, Counter Strike: Global Offensive (soon Counter Strike 2) or even Battlefield 2042. We also played Starfield mainly on this screen to carry out our test and it was more than up to the task.

It also checks AMD FreeSync Premium, VESA Adaptive Sync and VESA ClearMR certifications, allowing you to benefit from anti-blur and anti-glare technology. FreeSync is particularly useful for reducing screen tearing and stuttering. Its color range is not impressive (sRGB of 103%), however the rendering remains very correct for this price.

You shouldn’t expect a lot of options in the menus either. We only have standard adjustments such as color adjustment or different modes depending on your activities (types of game, film, web, etc.).
