Top Sales of the Week in Japan: Elder Ring Reminds Us of the PS5

The ranking of video game sales in Japan for the week of June 17 to 23, 2024, published by Famitsu, reveals some surprises and interesting trends in the Japanese video game landscape.

Leading the way this week is Elden Ring’s “Shadow of the Erdtree” edition on PS5, selling an impressive 24,012 copies in its first week. In second place, “Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance” continues to captivate players, despite a 77% drop from the previous week, with 7,303 copies sold this week, bringing the total to 39,191 copies. The remake of “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door” remains popular, holding on to third place with 7,189 units sold this week and an impressive 186,685 total since launch.

Still in the top 5, “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” proves its longevity with 6,179 copies sold this week, bringing its total to an impressive 5,876,739 copies sold since its release in 2017. “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” remains a safe bet with 6,103 sales this week, for a colossal total of 7,806,813 copies sold since its launch in 2020. In seventh place, a new entry with “Radiant Silvergun,” a classic shooter re-released by SuperDeluxe Games, which sold 5,455 copies in its first week. “Minecraft” continues to hold its own on the chart with 4,625 copies sold, demonstrating its continued popularity with a total of 3,548,971 copies since its arrival on Switch.

“Monster Hunter Stories” ranks ninth with 4,213 units sold this week, accumulating 14,429 sales since its recent launch, despite a 59% drop.

The Nintendo Switch family of consoles remains at the top of sales with a total of 38,205 units sold this week. Although this figure is slightly lower than the previous week (38,515 units), the Switch continues to dominate the market with a large lead. The OLED version remains the most popular, with 26,476 units sold, highlighting consumers' preference for models with improved screens. Year to date, the Switch has sold 1,344,128 units, although that's down from 1,942,366 units the year before.

Sales of Xbox Series consoles (X and S combined) remain modest, with only 958 units sold this week. The Xbox Series X, with 771 units, surpasses the Series S, which sold 187 units. Cumulative sales since the beginning of the year reached 58,746 units, down from 71,353 units the previous year. This brings total sales to 598,853 units since launch.

The PlayStation 5 holds onto second place with 22,830 units sold this week, almost flat compared to the previous week's 22,882 units. The standard version of the PS5 accounts for the majority of sales with 19,661 units, while the Digital Edition version sells 3,169 units. Year-to-date, the PS5 has accumulated 763,992 sales, a notable decrease from last year, but it continues to show a strong presence in the market with a total of 5,728,849 units sold since its launch. The PlayStation 4, although at the end of its life, continues to sell with 292 units this week, a slight increase from the previous week's 179 units. Although annual sales are down (11,706 units this year compared to 37,331 the year before), the PS4 has an impressive total of 9,502,765 units sold since its launch.
