Anyone who reads air battles will probably first think of spectacular dogfights from flight simulations such as Ace Combat, Project Wingman or DCS World. However, the current free game of the week from Epic Games has little to do with that.

Instead of using airplanes, you fight in The Falconeer on a falcon. And we don't mean Han Solo's legendary Millennium Falcon from Star Wars, but a real bird of prey. We present you titles.

The Falconeer – Game scenes from the air combat RPG

genre: Action RPG | developer: Thomas Sala | Release: November 2020

The Falconeer is a solo project by Dutch developer Tomas Sala, who role-playing game fans might know from his Skyrim mod Moonpath to Elsweyr. However, The Falconeer has little to do with the Elder Scrolls universe.

The Falconeer is set in a fantasy world called the Great Ursee, which is filled with beasts, rival factions, and secrets above and below ground. Here you take on the role of a Falconeer, a powerful warrior of the skies who travels the world to resolve disputes and uncover secrets.

On the back of a majestic warbird, you can engage in breathtaking aerial battles with pirates, octopuses and other threats. Oh yes: Your falcon can shoot lasers. With earned shards you can upgrade your bird and adapt it to your individual play style – so there's a bit of role-playing involved too.

For its artistic approach, The Falconeer 2021 was even nominated for a BAFTA Award by the British Film AcademyThe Unity engine serves as the technical framework for the game.

By the way: This year, the game even received a construction strategy spin-off called Bulwark: The Falconeer Chronicles. You can find out how it plays in our test by colleague Reiner Hauser:
