It's no secret that House of the Dragon isn't stingy with references to Game of Thrones. After all, many Westeros fans expect the spinoff series to give them the cozy feeling of coming home to a world they already know.

In episode one, we already met a real fan favorite, House Stark. And the fact that a choleric and megalomaniac king sits on the Iron Throne will probably sound familiar to many viewers from the parent series.

In the current third episode of House of the Dragon there is now a reference to one of the most important characters from Game of Thrones: Daenerys Targaryen. We explain what it is about.

Warning spoilers: The following paragraphs contain potential spoilers for the third episode of House of the Dragon Season 2, The burning mill. If you haven't seen the new episode yet, you shouldn't read any further!

Mighty Dragon Eggs

In The burning mill Open war between the rightful queen Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arci) and her rival Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) seems inevitable.

She decides to send her youngest children, Aegon and Viserys, to Pentos, far away from the Seven Kingdoms and potential assassins. She assigns her cousin Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell) and the two newly hatched dragons Tyraxes and Stormcloud to protect the children.

But what will be particularly interesting for fans is the luggage that Rhaenyra gives the children: A box with four colorful dragon eggsthat look very similar to those from Game of Thrones.

Fans now believe they have recognized the eggs that Daenerys Targaryen receives 200 years later for her wedding to Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa). Just like these, the eggs are reddish-black, green and golden.

Information from the director

Whether this is true, episode director Greeta Patel has now asked in an interview with US website Mashable confirmed: These are actually Daenerys' eggs. Everyone working on House of the Dragon are huge Game Of Thrones fans, so it was very exciting to shoot this scene.

However, Patel left open how this fits in with the official book canon of George RR Martin's novels. There, the author suggests that Daenerys' eggs arrived in Essos during the reign of Jaehaerys I, long before the events of House of the Dragon.

It is also unclear what happens to the fourth egg between the two series. When Daenerys receives the eggs in Game of Thrones, there are only three left. However, it is possible that the coming seasons of House of the Dragon will give us an answer to this question.

Did you recognize the dragon eggs in the new episode right away? What do you think happens to the fourth egg? Write it to us in the comments!
