The Last of Us Season 2: Debunking the ‘Too Woke’ Criticism

It’s Valentine’s Day. On February 14, lovers around the world celebrate their passion for their loved one. After a walk, a restaurant or any other activities to do as a couple, there’s nothing like a film or series to round off a “passionate” evening. Between season 2 of The Last of Us, a Netflix series and a science fiction film, here is today’s Culture recap!

The Last of Us season 2: a photo that says too much

Filming for season 2 of The Last of Us began in January and with it the first images did not take long to appear on the internet. On February 10, 2024, an image posted to u/breadfruitworrywitch’s reddit (see above) features a secondary location from The Last of Us: Part 2. It proves that HBO follows as closely as possible the narrative of the video game developed by Naughty Dog while taking some liberties with the original work for the purposes of the show. The photo thus reveals the Greenplace Market. This large, seemingly abandoned grocery store located in the open countryside quickly appears in The Last Of Us: Part 2 during a patrol carried out by Ellie and Dina.

The new trailer for Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom

On May 8, 2024, one of the oldest science fiction film franchises returns to the cinema after a first “reboot” trilogy which had attracted fans of the original film saga as well as fans of SF in the sense wide. Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom directed by Wes Ball (the Labyrinth saga) is the sequel to Planet of the Apes: Supremacy (2017) and sets its plot 300 years after the death of the famous Caesar. On this Earth dominated by primates, a leader tries to unify the clans by force. The new trailer released on YouTube (see above) on February 12 presents a young human who seems to be the key to this warlike tale.

This new Netflix series would be “too woke”

The new documentary series produced by Netflix has been at the heart of a controversy since its release on January 31, 2024. Alexander the Great: Among the Gods is a docu-fiction directed by Hugh Ballantyne, under the direction of Tony Mitchell, which traces the life of the king of Macedonia who became one of the greatest conquerors in History. However, the representation of this historical figure from Antiquity does not go down well with everyone. Some viewers question the sexual orientation of Alexander presented in this Netflix Original. Twenty years ago Colin Farrell already played a “bisexual” character in the film directed by Oliver Stone.

Crunchyroll buys another Japanese animation giant

On April 2, 2024, the simulcast platform Funimation will officially close its doors (and its servers). One of the main SVOD services specializing in Japanese animation in North America will therefore disappear to make way for “an exceptional streaming experience and access to the largest anime library in the world” according to officials. Like the merger between Wakanim and Crunchyroll on French territory, user accounts will be transferred under the best possible conditions. However, certain anime may disappear from the catalog. In addition, the prices applied will be those of Crunchyroll. Finally, digital copies purchased through Funimation will not be supported. This was already the case with Wakanim. Funimation officials said: “The collaboration between Funimation and Crunchyroll allows us to continue to fulfill this mission and offer you the best in animated content.”
