Paramount+, new kid on the market
As time goes by, everyone wants their own entertainment platform. For example, we have Max – formerly HBO Max – which belongs to Warner Bros. or Paramount+, which belongs to… Paramount. No surprise. The platform was launched in March 2021 and took a while before landing in France: it was only in 2022 that an agreement was reached with Canal+which offers the service through its Canal+ Ciné Séries offering.
But then, what to watch on Paramount+? Still some big original programs like Star Trek Strange New Worlds, the Halo series, the Grease prequel Rise of the Pink Ladies and Tulsa King (with Sylvester Stallone in the role of a mob boss). Slowly but surely, the platform is strengthening its proposition, which must be muscular in the face of big names like Prime Video, Apple TV or Netflix.
Paramount + increases its prices, Netlix rubs its hands
Paramount+ will not have deviated from the rule: it too is preparing to become more expensive, at least in the United States. From August 20, 2024, The Paramount+ Essential plan (with ads) will increase from $6 to $8 per month. The ad-free package with Showtime, the most expensive option with new programs, will increase from 12 dollars to 13 dollars per month. Only the medium formula will not change in price. Note that the annual cost of Paramount+ does not change either, regardless of the formula.
In fact, in the USA, Paramount+ then becomes as expensive as Disney Plus and Peacock. But above all, this makes Netflix the cheapest VOD platform on the market since its ad-free offer costs $7 per month. And this, even though Netflix has increased the prices of its other plans in recent years.
What could be a game changer for Netflix, or even a way to boost its subscriber numbers? According to the latest reports from Paramount Global, Paramount+ still has 71 million subscribers.
