The catastrophic sequel to The Mummy

Film sequels that are partly massacred by critics, but which bring in more money than their predecessors, they exist! It's the case for The Return of the Mummythe sequel to the cult film that is The Mummy. To produce this feature film released in 2001, the same team got to work, including screenwriter and director Stephen Sommers who returned to his place behind the camera as well as actors Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah and Arnold Vosloo who resume their roles of yesteryear. The episode takes place eight years after the events of the first film, with Rick O'Connell and Evelyn Gordon now married and parents to a son named Alex, all leading peaceful lives in London. Their peace is shattered when the mummy of Imhotep, resurrected once again, wreaks havoc in the city.

The film, which also marks the debut of Dwayne Johnson in the key role of the Scorpion King, is a real hit: It grossed $433 million at the worldwide box office. (compared to approximately $416 million for The Mummy). However, it also received largely mixed reviews. If we salute the creation for its spectacular special effects and its entertaining action scenes, we also regret that “the characters seem secondary to the computer-generated imagery“. this is in any case what we can read in the press consensus posted on Rotten Tomatoes, where a low score of 46% based on 141 reviews. The Rolling Stones media will go so far as to say that it is a “mediocre mummy film that doesn't add anything worth keeping.”

The first episode can be viewed on the paid Prime Video service, if you like to do things in order. If it can reassure you, the public is more lenient about the return of this damn mummy: as evidenced by the score of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. Otherwise, good movies are also available on the platform, like The Devil Wears Prada, August Rush or The Boom 2 for the most nostalgic among you.
