Steam offers the perfect alternative at a bargain price for those looking to pack up their Nintendo Switch

Have you been thinking about getting a Steam Deck for a while, but thought it was too expensive? That might have changed now. Valve is selling its handheld console in two versions for 15 percent less.

Valve reduces two versions of the Steam Deck

The fact that the Nintendo Switch is now over seven years old is particularly noticeable in the lack of performance of the console. If this bothers you, but you still want a powerful handheld console for traveling or commuting, the best thing to do is to go for the SteamDeck.

Now is the time to think again about getting the console. Valve is offering the Steam Deck with LCD in the 64 GB and 512 GB versions at a much lower price – both models are 15 percent reduced (watch on Steam):

Steam Deck (64GB) for 313.65 euros instead of 369,00 Euro Steam Deck (512 GB) for 398.65 euros instead of 469,00 Euro

Both consoles are still until 11 July 2024 at 7 p.m. reduced.

Colleague Severin took a look at the Steam Deck two years ago and was impressed – even though there were some criticisms at the time, many of which have since been resolved:

The 64 GB version of the Steam Deck is available at the current special price a real insider tip – after all, it is less than 40 euros more expensive than a normal Nintendo Switch.

Good to know: The memory of the Steam Deck can be easily expanded via a microSD card, just like the Switch. If that is not enough, you can also replace the eMMC/SSD memory built into the console with a larger model. Especially when buying the 64 GB version, it can be worthwhile to invest in a 1 TB M.2 SSD (2230) to get a Big and fast memory upgrade at a relatively low price to get hold of.

Who is the Steam Deck worth it for?

One thing is clear: the Steam Deck is not a full-fledged Nintendo Switch replacement. After all, players can only get Nintendo games to run on the Steam Deck via a detour.

However, if you don’t mind this and already have a large Steam library, the Steam Deck will give you a solid handheld console. This will also help you slowly but surely work through the pile of shame that has built up over the years.

However, you should keep in mind that the Steam Deck has its performance limitsIn principle, you can start and play games like Starfield on the Steam Deck. But especially in big cities, action-packed firefights or densely populated areas, the frame rate drops so much that playing becomes almost torture.

Graphically less demanding games, indie games or retro classics are ideal for the Steam Deck. And even big AAA games that are a few years old run surprisingly smoothly. Games like GTA 5, Doom, Monster Hunter Rise, Batman: Arkham Knight, Fallout 4, Helldivers 2 or Horizon Zero Dawn can be made to run without any problems with a few adjustments in the settings menu.

Good to know: In addition to the classic LCD version, there is now also a Steam Deck with an OLED display. But the extra cost is not worth it for everyone:
