STAR WARS Jedi Survivor: Xbox Series X|S and PS5 versions compared by Digital Foundry | XboxOne

As we know, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is having a difficult launch, in particular because of its performance.Whether on PC or consoles, the title of Respawn suffers from many problems and Digital Foundry today delivers its technical analysis of the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 versions.

A visually successful game

Despite the issues plaguing the game, Digital Foundry begins by explaining that Jedi Survivor is visually successful. In comparison to STAR WARS Jedi: Fallen Order, released in 2018, we indeed notice the care given to the environments and the technical gap in terms of textures and foliage in this new opus.

The expert also highlights the work done on the characters and the light, and describes the first contact with the game and its introductory cutscene as “something special”.

The game also offers ray tracing on consoles, and seems to use RTGI in particular for light management.Ray tracing is also used for reflections, combined with traditional SSR.

2 graphics modes on Xbox Series X and PS5

Whether on Xbox Series X or PS5, STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor offers two different graphics modes in which ray tracing is active. In quality mode, the game runs in 4K resolution, reconstructed from frames ranging from 972p to 1440p via FSR 2.

In performance mode, the target image is 1440p, from images ranging from 648p to 864p.Digital Foundry also specifies that the two consoles generally share the same parameters.

The result obtained thanks to the FSR depends a lot on the native resolution of the image, and inevitably defects are visible.Artifacts regularly appear on the screen, especially in the performance mode which uses lower resolution native images.

Sawtooth performance

If the title offers generally successful graphics, it is at the cost of its image quality and especially its performance.Whether on Xbox Series X or PS5, the game generally runs well at 30 FPS in its quality mode.Digital Foundry nevertheless underlines some framerate drops and noticeable tearing in certain scenes or busy cutscenes, but the overall result is considered suitable.

The performance mode suffers from various problems and the 60 FPS is difficult to reach on both consoles. The game generally runs at a “dynamic” framerate between 45 and 60 FPS, with constant tearing.

Players equipped with VRR compatible screens will benefit from an overall better experience, but the result is not the most optimal.

Only one mode and no ray tracing on Xbox Series S

The Xbox Series S offers a single graphics mode targeting 30 FPS and ray tracing seems totally absent from this version of the game. The native resolution looks like 864p, then upscaled to 1080p via FSR 2.

Despite a few framerate drops here and there, the performance is considered satisfactory and the game generally runs well at 30 FPS.

Below is the full analysis from Digital Foundry.Note also that an update aimed at improving performance on consoles will be available today, and that other corrective patches are expected in the coming weeks.

STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor is available on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC, with multiple editions available from mainstream retailers.
