Square Enix: Focus on big brands

As is well known, Square Enix wants to shift its focus to fewer and larger projects in the future. But what does this mean for smaller titles like “Octopath Traveler”? The publisher explains.

A realignment that will result in Square Enix developing and publishing fewer titles in the future. The publisher also pointed out that the focus in the next few years will be on major brands. This naturally raised concerns among players that smaller and more creative projects such as the “Octopath Traveler” series could be left out in the future.

During a conference with investors and shareholders, Takashi Kiryu, CEO of Square Enix, addressed this issue and was visibly keen to allay the gaming community's fears.

Small projects continue to play a role

According to a Japanese journalist, Kiryu was asked about Square Enix's new “quality over quantity” approach at the investor conference. As the publisher's CEO assured, Square Enix's strategic reorientation will not come at the expense of smaller projects. These will continue to be developed.

“If we define indie games as casual games on a small to medium scale, we are also working hard on that,” said Kiryu. “I can't name any specific titles at the moment, but our development pipeline doesn't just include big titles.”

Square Enix shifts focus to multiplatform titles

In the course of the current annual report, Square Enix admitted that both “Final Fantasy 16” and “Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth” sold below internal expectations.

A development that the Japanese publisher is responding to with a new and “aggressive multiplatform strategy” want to react.



When it comes to HD titles, Square Enix aims to produce regular multiplatform releases for PC, PlayStation systems, Xbox consoles and Nintendo's platforms. At the same time, the company wants to expand its market share in the mobile games sector with high-quality productions.

Furthermore, Square Enix admitted in its last annual report that the internal restructuring to layoffs in Europe and North America.
