Savior of a Future Game: The Remarkable Story of Square Enix’s Triumph

One of the next Square Enix games seems to be off to a bad start, but the publisher does not want to give up on releasing it and production is experiencing a new twist.

Square Enix's financial results are not positive. During the last meeting on March 27, 2024, the publisher notified its investors of a loss of 22.1 billion yen, or approximately 140.8 million US dollars. This announcement did not come as a surprise in itself since before sharing the news, the company had announced that sales of its mobile games were declining, and that the MMO category was not at its best either. And this despite the huge success of FF14. To change things, the company wants to be more careful in selecting its future projects.

Square Enix does not turn away from Project Gemini

After this financial loss, Square Enix announced a new strategic course. From now on, the publisher wants to avoid excessive spending, by carefully distributing the funds allocated to future games for higher profitability. Previously, the Japanese company had also stated that it wanted to push AAA further, even if Dragon Quest 3 Remake is due to be released on November 14, 2024. Given the plans outlined by Square Enix, the Final Fantasy license has nothing to worry about, and Elsewhere, FF7 Remake 3 is still in development.

However, for some time now, things have been scorching for Project Gemini. One of the secret games from People Can Fly, the developers of the looter shooter Outriders, already published by Square Enix at the time. A title which unfortunately failed to bring together a real community, but which sold well according to the words of the former president of the group. Enough to order Outriders 2 from People Can Fly, which would respond to the code name Project Gemini internally? It's a hypothesis, but we still have no certainty about the nature of the game.

What we do know, however, is that the studio unfortunately laid off about fifty people who were working on it. Project Gemini had even been temporarily suspended last year, but People Can Fly and Square Enix reached an agreement. In a press release, the studio indicated that it had negotiated a new amendment to the contract for the continuation of development. Good news? For the teams, yes, since at least there is no outright cancellation. It remains to be seen how Project Gemini will evolve in the coming months, knowing that it should not be available before 2026.
