Spike Chunsoft and Bandai Namco play on the nostalgia of Dragon Ball fans! Sparking Zero is the spiritual sequel to the Budokai Tenkaichi franchise. The latest game was released in 2007. 15 years later, players are finally entitled to a new episode. Scheduled for October 11, we were able to play it during the Summer Game Fest and there are new features. Discover the content of the title in our JV Fast.

Like old times

For those who have already played the Budokai Tenkaichi games released on PS2 (and on Wii for some), the gameplay of Dragon Ball Sparking Zero should not disturb you. Hitting, defending yourself, teleporting, throwing energy waves… It's very easy to find your way around and the movements seem more real than life. Especially since the visual effects deepen the sensations of power and speed of the characters. Enough to make us want to move everywhere in the arenas.

In terms of techniques and powers, this may seem similar to what the games Xenoverse and Budokai Tenkaichi offered. Below the characters' life bar, you can see an energy bar divided into 5 sections. You will need to fill it (by pressing a button) to be able to use different attacks like a kamehameha. On the other hand, there is a blue bar that charges as the fight progresses. Once fully charged, you get a skill point that you can use to launch chain attacks. No energy used here, only your strength and your fists!

A story, but not only that!

In terms of game modes, there will of course be a versus mode, in which you will have the possibility to face your friends online, but also locally. Another mode called 'episode battle' serves as a single-player story and adventure. It will be possible to follow the epic tale of 8 characters. We don't know which of the roster will be playable in this mode, but Son Goku will be there, given that he is the protagonist of the manga.

If at first glance the 'episode battle' mode may seem quite classic, this one will allow you to spice things up a little thanks to 'what if' scenarios. Yes, this information was already known to players, but we had the opportunity to see it in action and it looks pretty good. For example, it will be possible to confront Radditz alongside Krillin. Whereas in Akira Toriyama's work, it is Piccolo who accompanies Son Goku to kill him. A fairly unique novelty which will allow the exploration of different temporalities and will offer special endings to players.

The only negative point that could be given to this mode is that the characters are very static during the dialogue phases. They appear stoic and have very few animations. This does not mean that the game is going to be an excellent arena fighter! To discover all the new features of Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, go to our JV Fast at the top of the article!
