Repeatedly mentioned over the years, this promising project around Horizon Zero Dawn will ultimately never see the light of day, having apparently been placed in the wrong hands.

While waiting for a sequel or a new game after the brilliant Forbidden West from Guerrilla Games, there was indeed talk for a long time of a series inspired by the story of Horizon Zero Dawn from Netflix. A recent report, however, has dampened fans' hopes, but apparently for the right reasons.

Finally, no Netflix series for Horizon Zero Dawn

It's been a few years since we heard about an adaptation of Guerrilla Games' landmark franchise on the small screen at Netflix. The last news was that it was a prequel to the first installment, called Horizon 2074. The idea was to see in live action the events that led to the world as Aloy and the rest of humanity know it, largely dominated by animal-shaped machines.

This promising project seems, however, at least for now, to be a thing of the past. Last week, Rolling Stone published a report against Steve Blackman, showrunner of Umbrella Academy. According to 12 witnesses, he allegedly behaved in a manipulative and toxic manner on the set, harassing many employees. By digging into the story, Rolling Stone learned that the showrunner had two other projects in the pipeline at Netflix: Orbital, a new original series and… the famous adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn.

Now in disgrace, Steve Blackman has reportedly received the cancellation of said projects as a sentence. Since the Horizon 2074 series had only been the subject of rumors until now, we can bet that it was then only in an embryonic state. However, does this sound the complete death knell for a prequel adaptation that was promising on paper? Not necessarily, as Sony could choose another partner to take up the torch. The Japanese giant probably does not intend to sit on a potential windfall after the enormous and contagious success of the series The Last of Us at HBO.

Waiting for news from Aloy

Regarding the video game sequel to Aloy's adventures, players will have to be patient. For the time being, there is talk of a multiplayer game in production. Given the cancellation of the spin-off of the same type for The Last of Us and the recent layoffs within the big PlayStation studios, should fans be worried? Apparently not in an immediate Horizon in any case.
