A possible trilogy before the MCU

If you are a fan of series, you surely did not miss The Boys. And for good reason, the Amazon Prime Video show is without a doubt one of the major releases of this early summer, with the broadcast of its Season 4. But if the series is a phenomenon today, it turns out that the story could have been quite different.

This is indeed what an article in the media reveals Rolling Stone. According to their sources, in 2008, the story of Hughie, Butcher and the others could have seen the light of day not on the small screen, but on the big screen. Indeed, for a time, director Adam McKay, to whom we owe the films The Big Short And Don't Look Up: Cosmic Denialworked on a The Boys trilogy for the cinema. Adam even wrote the entire script for a hypothetical first part, but unfortunately failed to obtain an agreement from the producers.

Audience not yet ready for The Boys

This missed opportunity seems logical when we put it in the context of the time. 2008 was the year the very first Iron Man was released, Hollywood had not yet converted to the MCU and all these superhero films. So imagining that a universe as vulgar and bloody as The Boys could succeed in cinema was truly unthinkable. This is also what the designer of the original comic admits:

“I wouldn't change the way it happened because the show is amazing. Adam McKay was doing some really cool stuff. But the fact is, it was 2008 and not 2018. I don't think the public was ready for The Boys.” Darick Robertons for Rolling Stone

Although imagining a trilogy of The Boys in the cinema is very exciting. Given the success of the TV series, The choice to wait for a more propitious moment for adaptation was much wiser. Moreover, to discover or rediscover the universe of The Boys, the first three seasons are fully available on Prime Video. As for the fourth season, it is still being broadcast. The fifth episode has just been released and we're talking about it in this article.
