When we were stuck at home during the lockdown and applauding the medical profession from our windows, the man who played Dr. Carter in the series ER was secretly thinking about the return of the show.

NFS, chemistry, iono!

Do you remember ER? This series, whose first episode was released in 1994 in the United States, was broadcast on Sunday evenings on France 2. While today it is common to imagine the show as a soap opera resembling Grey's Anatomy, ER is actually much more than that. Featuring breathtaking staging using numerous sequence shots (which was rare on television at the time), the series includes several particularly original episodes, both in terms of content and form. Fans are bound to shed a tear of nostalgia when they remember “Direct to the Emergency Room”, the first episode of season 4, which was filmed/broadcast live as if it were a real live report, transmitted on TV. The show, imagined by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park) and produced by Amblin (Steven Spielberg), allowed a certain George Clooney to become known.

An urgency to return

Comprising 15 seasons for 331 episodes, the series ended in 2009, leaving the patients of the famous Cook County Hospital in Chicago orphaned of their favorite doctors. What we learn Premiereis that Noah Wyle, the actor who plays Carter, wanted to resurrect the series a few months ago. The actor actually approached John Wells, former showrunner of ER, so that fans could find Cook County again. The idea came to him during the Covid pandemic.

The revival project had a good case for returning, but unfortunately negotiations with Michael Crichton's rights holders fell through.. “I didn't feel good about myself. I felt like I was worthless. It really bothered me that I wasn't contributing significantly to the fight against Covid.” explains Noah Wyle. At that time, the actor wanted “highlighting the people on the front lines”, people who care for others but who are “exhausted and overwhelmed“. A bit like in ER, isn't it? That's why the actor got back in touch with John Wells and other writers, with a funny idea: to relaunch the series ER.

There is a basic idea, that of not “reboot“with a new cast, but to continue the series by focusing on one character – we imagine that of Carter – in order to bring”an update on what's happening in the health system today“. However, negotiations with Michael Crichton's rights holders have not been successful. There is, however, some good news: the project is not really clinically dead. Wyle and Wells eventually created a new medical series, titled The Pitt. 15 episodes are expected at Max, for release in 2025. “The series aims to show a realistic view of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today's America, set in a modern hospital in Pittsburgh.” it reads. Noah Wyle will be the main actor.
