I think Cyberpunk is obviously a quintessentially American story. There's a lot of punk energy, and it was written by an American, so it feels right to do it in America.

THE FPS/RPG is based on Mike Pondsmith's tabletop role-playing game, but even though the latter helped CD Project to develop Cyberpunk 2077, video games remained very European, as some players have pointed out. Paweł Sasko, associate director of the game, says:

There's this interesting story after Cyberpunk 2077 came out that blew up on Reddit at one point, the manhole cover debacle. (…) There was this post with the guy saying there was this immersion-breaking issue in Cyberpunk, and the issue was that the manhole covers were the manhole covers that you would normally use in Europe, in Germany, for a sidewalk. They're not the manhole covers that you would normally use on the streets of America.

That basically shows you the differences, right? When you go to America, there are things like fire hydrants, where they're placed and what they look like. Street lights, where they're placed, trash cans, you know? They're in front of the house, right next to the street. In Poland, in Europe, you hardly see it anywhere. There's so many nuances. Dan, when we talk about it, he calls it Americana.

Dan Hernberg continues:

Our borders are different, our colors are different on all of our panels. Everything is just slightly different. It doesn't break the immersion, but it's just that little thing where you're like, “Well, maybe this wasn't made by people who live here or people who fully understand all of American culture.”

I also think that being in America, it allows us to have these cultural touchpoints with the broader American influence, you know, with Hollywood. Obviously, Cyberpunk 2077 was set in Los Angeles, and so there's all these cultural touchpoints and things that we can kind of interact with, whether it's through music, history, or just different parts of America that are interesting to explore.

Thanks to CD Projekt North America, Project Orion will therefore be more “American” than Cyberpunk 2077mainly developed by Poles who only knew the United States through movies or music. We will have to wait a long time before discovering this sequel. In the meantime, you can find Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition from €39.99 on Amazon, Cdiscount, Fnac And GOG.com.
