One of the biggest Netflix movies of 2024 has been available on the platform since this morning. A new episode of a cult trilogy from the 80s that does not .

Netflix's July 2024 releases are slowly coming. It started off smoothly with movies Percy Jacksonthe musical feature film Where we come from with Melissa Barrera (Scream 5 & 6, Abigail…), the comedy An hour of peace with Christian Clavier and Carole Bouquet, or even the anime The Rising of the Shield Hero. Not really must-haves at first glance, but today's addition could perhaps redistribute the cards. A highly anticipated project has just joined the new releases for the week of July 1-7, 2024.

The sequel to an iconic 80's trilogy available on Netflix

Netflix has launched some big films since the beginning of the year, and the least we can say is that there have been a lot of failures. Between Atlas and Rebel Moon Part 2, subscribers have had a few bad evenings, which hasn't bothered the company with the red N that much. Zack Snyder's film, for example, was a ratings hit despite the flood of (very) negative reviews. A little earlier, the SVOD service also brought back Nicky Larson for a 100% Japanese live-action feature film. And we know that video streaming platforms are a fertile ground for bringing back licenses that might no longer have a place in the cinema, like Beverly Hills Cop 4.

The cult character played by Eddie Murphy is back on Netflix for a new adventure with some of his old sidekicks, including Serge (Bronson Pinchot), Sergeant John Taggart (John Ashton) and Inspector Billy Rosewoord (Judge Reinhold). All these little people have aged a little, and unfortunately, Eddie Murphy lost his iconic French voice in 2019, after the death of Med Hondo.

This may prevent French audiences from enjoying the new Netflix film as much as they did in the old days, but either way, this episode is divisive. TheWrapthe quality is no longer there. “If you're looking for another Beverly Hills Cop movie, here it is. If you want another great Beverly Hills Cop movie, you can wait a little longer.”. The Hollywood Reporter is not more excited. “The lack of new perspectives, excitement and the directors' imitation of the original formula, chaining together unimaginative action scenes, make this sequel already seem stale.”.

Reviews for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

So far, Beverly Hills Cop 4 is starting its run on Netflix with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 69% from 64 critic reviews. “Axel F can't afford to overplay the dynamics of the character who is out of his element (he's no stranger to Beverly Hills anymore), but he manages to find a clever way to tweak the formula without completely disrupting it.” estimated IndieWire. “It's a film of familiar pleasures that, like Harold Faltermeyer's synth-pop theme, are always infectious.” concludes Slant Magazine.

If you are unhappy about the lack of the original French version for Eddie Murphy's voice, you can try watching the new film in its original version. To get a preview, here are some excerpts in VOSTFR. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F has been available on Netflix since July 3, 2024.
