Nintendo speaks out on AI

A new mandatory revolution for many, a real problem for just as many others, artificial intelligence is obviously a hot topic that we have not finished talking about. In the world of video games, so-called generative AI allows programmers, scriptwriters or even artists to considerably speed up their work… and that is even the whole subject: to what extent AI will not replace them?

In any case, on Nintendo's side, generative AI is a topic already discussed and it is Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa revealed the company's policy at the latest annual shareholders' meeting.

In the video game industry, AI-type technologies have long been used to control the movements of enemy characters. So I think game development and AI technology have always been closely linked. Generative AI, which has been a hot topic recently, may be more creative, but I also recognize that it raises issues with intellectual property rights.

Our company has the know-how to create optimal gaming experiences for our customers for decades. While we are flexible when it comes to technological developments, we want to continue to offer value that is unique to us and cannot be created simply by technology alone.

A policy against the current?

Inevitably, by voluntarily moving away from AI to better focus on its human resources, a parallel must be made with other players in the video game industry. On the contraryMicrosoft has already revealed that it is fully involved in generative AI to “explore more creative ideas, with detailed scripting, dialogue trees, quests and much more”with even the possibility of generating entire characters.

Same story from Ubisoft, with Yves Guillemot having declared last June “to need AI, we need the cloud, in order to have the possibility of bringing new experiences”. “Generative AI will allow for more interactive and vibrant open worlds, taking our games to another level in possible interactions.”
