First meeting with Miss Downes on RDR 2
The first time you'll meet Miss Downes in Red Dead Redemption 2 is when you go to collect a debt for Leopold Strauss. At that point, he sends you get one from Thomas Downes who doesn't seem to want to pay for it.
So you rush him, threatening and hitting him. Unfortunately, his son and his wife, Edith Downes, see you. To make matters worse, Thomas Downes would contract tuberculosis and die some time later.
Leopold Strauss then transfers his debt to his wife who finds herself mourning her husband and in debt. She then gives you the money, but clearly does not like you. She leaves the family ranch with her son right after to start a new life far from all that.
As a result of your actions, Edith Downes is forced into prostitution.
Her new life takes her to Saint Denis where, in order to survive, Edith Downes will have to start prostituting herself. To continue this “hidden quest”, you will have to come to the aid of Brother Dorkin via the quest “A Brother in Need”. Once this is completed, you may meet Miss Downes again.
The latter does not recognize you at first and offers you her services. Then, when she understands who you are, she will find the police, sending them after you and telling them that you are harassing her. You will not advance further in this story.
The next time you'll come across her is during Chapter 5 of the adventure, Guarma. There, when you go to the town of Annesburg, you'll be able to see Miss Downes with a new client. But when she sees you, she runs away without asking for more.
As you will have understood, until now, although you will come across Miss Downes several times, you will not have the possibility of influencing events. This will change during chapter 6 of the game, entitled Beaver Hollow. Attention for the following events, you will need to have a high level of honor.
If so, head back to Annesburg to meet Edith Downes. She reveals that her son is being harassed at the mine where she works. So head there to deal with the problem and you will finally be able to talk to Edith Downes.
You will tell her that you are sorry, without trying to make up for it. You will then convince her and her son to leave town. To have the right to the end of this story, you will have to wait for the epilogue. There, you will see a Miss Downes who seems to be doing much better. She and her son board a boat in Saint Denis.
Additionally, it is possible to find a newspaper article about Miss Downes and her son during your adventures. This newspaper article then tells you that the latter has opened a golf course and even has a few shops in the west and that these are fruitful.
