Even though Steam has been part of PC gamers' daily lives for over 20 years, Valve's platform continues to evolve and welcome a whole bunch of updates. For the past few days, it's A major addition that has entered beta: Steam Game Recording. As its name suggests, this tool allows you to capture and record your exploits on almost all games in the store (only older titles, which do not support Steam Overlay, may pose a problem).

The principle is simple, you can either save your game manually or in the background. In the latter case, Valve notes that it is possible to review what has just happened – “a very useful function to see how your character died, to remember a previous dialogue with an NPC”, specifies the company… Finally – in both cases -, The Steam Overlay now benefits from a tab dedicated to Game Recording which displays both your capture as such and its timeline. This makes it easy to edit your recording and share it, either in Steam chat or as a raw file.

A feature worth checking out

In short, a simple tool in fact but which comes with a really well thought-out detail: game benchmarks. Concretely, if a studio natively integrates Game Recording into its Steam version, The player will then be able to see – directly on the timeline of his automatic recording – various markers indicating the highlights of his game. For example, if you fall in battle in Elden Ring, a skull will automatically slide onto the timeline. Of course, you can also add, with a keyboard shortcut, your own landmarks without leaving the game… Handy for sorting your small captures.

For now, only a few games offer these automatic markers (including Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2). Yes, Steam Game Recodring is still in beta and will improve as the weeks go by. In any case, If you want to try it out right now, just join the beta client by going to the “Steam” button – top left of the store – then “Settings” and “Interface”. If you're wondering: yes, it's also available on the Steam Deck.
