Vin Diesel has multiple talents

Hearing the name of Vin Dieselyou are certainly thinking of the saga Fast & Furious, and that's quite normal. It must be said that with no less than 10 films on the clock (more if we count the spin-offs) spread over more than 20 years, this action film saga has completely left its mark on entertainment cinema and the many spectators who followed her. Since 2001, American actor Vin Diesel has played the role of Dominic Toretto, better known by his nickname Dom. But did you know that he also starred in a famous film by Steven Spielberg ?

Indeed, younger people may not know it, but Vin Diesel had already stood out at the end of the 1990s thanks to his role in the film We have to save the soldier Ryan. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this feature film is still considered today as an authentic masterpiece, even as a film of great historical importance. Vin Diesel then played the soldier 1st class Adrian Caparzoand that didn't stop him from incurring the wrath of Spielberg.

Steven Spielberg accuses him of a crime against cinema

In 1990, Vin Diesel made his film debut starring in the film Awakening (Awakenings in VO). Upon its release, the feature film achieved the feat of catching the eye of none other than Steven Spielberg, who took the opportunity to write a tailor-made role for Vin Diesel: the famous Adrian Caparzo from Saving Private Ryan . However, in an interview with The National in 2020, The American actor revealed that Spielberg still holds a grudge against him for a certain mistake:

Speaking of Steven Spielberg, I saw him recently and he said to me, 'When I wrote the role for you in Saving Private Ryan, obviously I was hiring the actor, but I was also the director in you that I secretly defended, and you didn't achieve enough.

Because yes, in case you didn't know, Vin Diesel also had a brief career as a director in his life.. He notably created the short film Multi-Facial in 1995 in which he played the lead role. The latter was also screened at the Cannes Film Festival, a great debut for the young director he was at the time. In addition to Multi-Facial, Vin Diesel also directed a 20-minute short film from the Fast & Furious franchise entitled Los Bandoleros. Since its release in 2009, the American actor has never directed anything again, much to Spielberg's regret.

It is precisely this lack of directorial ambition in Vin Diesel that Spielberg described as a “crime against cinema”. According to him, Vin Diesel has real talent as a director, and he even begged him to “return to the director's chair”. Yet, despite all of Spielberg's efforts, Vin Diesel has yet to announce any directing projects. He has already spoken in interviews about his desire to create a trilogy about General Hannibal Barca, but nothing has ever been made official. With any luck, the American actor will one day accept Steven Spielberg's request and move to the other side of the camera.
