Fans of the survival horror series Resident Evil have reason to rejoice, as Capcom has now officially confirmed that they are working on a new main part of the successful franchise. There have been a number of rumors about a Resident Evil 9 recently, but until last night's Capcom NEXT Summer 2024, there was still no confirmation from the developers, which is now available.

Work on the latest main part of the series has already begun and Resident Evil 9 already has a director. This is Koshi Nakanishi, who was previously responsible for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

“We're making a new Resident Evil. It was really hard to figure out what to do after Resident Evil 7, but I did it and to be honest, it feels really substantial. I can't reveal any details yet, but I hope you're looking forward to the day when I can,” said Nakanishi in an initial statement on the announcement.

There has been speculation about a Resident Evil 9 since 2022; at the time it was said that the new title would be codenamed “Apocalypse” – but it is unclear whether this is really the case. However, Capcom seems to be planning at least major innovations and changes compared to previous parts of the series. For example, a renowned leaker recently claimed that the title could be an open-world game for the first time in the franchise's history.

A release of Resident Evil 9 is probably conceivable for 2025, especially since Capcom has in the past liked to announce new titles a year before their market launch. This schedule was also recently discussed and presented in insider circles. We'll keep you updated!
