What about the delay and image quality? “PlayStation Portal” impressions

First, start with “PlayStation Portal Remote Player (hereinafter referred to as PS Portal)”. This is a peripheral device that allows you to enjoy remote play via Wi-Fi, allowing you to enjoy PS5 games at hand without using a TV or monitor. Since it cannot be used alone and is positioned as a peripheral for remote play, it has the impression that it plays a role similar to the Wii U Game Pad rather than a portable PC such as the Steam Deck or a portable game device such as the Nintendo Switch. .

Here is the outer box. It has a horizontally elongated shape. ASTRO-kun is super cute.

The contents are very simple, just the “PS Portal” itself and a USB Type-C to Type-C cable for charging.

The screen is large at 8 inches, and this is what it looks like when compared to the 6.2 inch early Nintendo Switch.

On the top of the main unit are a volume control button, a power button, and a button for the wireless audio technology “PlayStation Link” (hereinafter referred to as PS Link) that can be used with compatible products.

The bottom of the main unit is equipped with a USB Type-C adapter for charging and a 3.5mm earphone jack. The overall interface is pretty clean.

When you start the console, you will be asked to sign in to your PSN account. If you have PS App installed on your smartphone, you can sign in immediately by scanning and approving the QR code.

The top menu looks like this. As the name “Portal” suggests, an animation that looks like a portal opening flows. In addition to connecting to PS5, here you can adjust the volume, set PS Link, adjust screen brightness, switch airplane mode, and make various settings. The basic operation is to wait for it to connect to the PS5 and start playing, so it’s simple and easy to use without any hesitation.

When you actually play the game, you’ll be surprised to find that you can play it without any problems. The display is a 1080p LCD screen that clearly displays beautiful images and fine text, and supports operation at up to 60fps. The controller is almost the same as the DualSense, and you can enjoy functions such as haptic feedback and trigger effects.

Of course, it can’t beat the experience of playing on a larger display, but there are no noticeable lags, and it’s a rich enough experience for a device that can be played easily.

Due to the nature of remote play devices via Wi-Fi, stable communication speed is important. For reference, my internet speed is as follows. In my environment, the image quality was quite low on the 2.4GHz band and it was difficult to play properly, but when I connected it on the 5GHz band, the operation became very stable. It takes a little time to connect for the first time, but I am impressed that you can access it immediately from the second time onwards.

However, it becomes quite unstable while downloading files. Therefore, when you usually use PS5 on a display, it is a good idea to download the titles you want to play on PS Portal in advance.

If there’s one thing I’m concerned about, it’s that the touchpad’s functions are assigned to screen taps. Although the screen is clean, I am very concerned about fingerprints. If you want to use it cleanly, it would be safer to purchase a microfiber cloth or prepare a film.

Also, since the main unit is large and it is a bit difficult to store it, you will want to make sure you have a storage case or stand. If you accidentally step on it, it could be disastrous, so be sure to keep it in a safe place.

The feature that we are looking for in this unit is, of course, support for cloud streaming. The fact that you can easily play games stored on the console is a huge strength, but the specifications are the same as the remote play that was previously possible on PCs and smartphones, so cloud streaming is not possible at all. If it becomes compatible with the cloud and allows you to start games without the hassle of downloading and play PS3 games, this strength will be more useful.

As handheld devices such as the Nintendo Switch, which allows you to play games without being glued to a display, and portable PCs, are becoming more and more popular, I felt that this product provides a variation of the options. This device is perfect for situations such as playing that game or that game that you have a lot of but don’t feel like sitting down to play.

It’s smaller than I thought! ?Also check out the new PS5

Next, we will also give you an impression of the new PS5, also known as “PS5 Slim”. This product does not have the same performance improvements as the PS4 Pro, but there are changes such as a redesigned design, smaller size, and a removable disk drive.

It seems that it is more than 30% smaller than the previous model, but the difference is obvious when you look at the outer box. It is much smaller than the impression that “PS5’s outer box is huge…”.

The texture of the plate has been changed from a matte texture to a glossy texture. The diagonal line in the center of the main body is stylish.

One point is that the plates are separated by a diagonal line in the center, making it easier to install and replace M.2 SSDs. With the old model, I was worried that the entire side plate would bend and break when I removed the claws and moved it, but now that it’s divided into four panels, it’s easier to open.

The user is only expected to open the side with the M.2 SSD slot and the disk drive side, which greatly reduces the workload.

Maybe it’s because the PS5 has a design that spreads out on top, but when you look at them side by side, there doesn’t seem to be that much of a difference, but when you actually look at them individually, they’re smaller than you think. The weight has been successfully reduced by more than 1 kg, reducing the burden of carrying it around.

The best thing I thought was that the front interface was easier to understand. With the power button and eject button separated, you no longer have to worry about which one is which. The change from one USB Type-C to two USB Type-C may be difficult to use depending on the peripheral device environment.

The rear interface has been placed upside down, but it is basically the same.

Please note that pairing the disc drive and PS5 requires an Internet connection. This may not be a big deal for users in Japan, where the Internet has become widespread, but it is a specification that may be controversial in some countries.

The vertical stand that was included by default with the old model is now sold separately. Instead, feet for horizontal placement are included.

Unlike the old model, the stand requires separate installation work. You need to remove the cap on the bottom of the main unit, align the screw holes, and secure it. Fixing is easy and can be done by hand, so it shouldn’t be a big hassle. However, the installation instructions are different for models that come standard with a disk drive and models that do not, so please check the manual carefully.

The performance itself has not changed, so if you buy this new model, your gaming experience will change dramatically! It does not mean that. If you usually keep it on the floor, you should definitely buy a new one! Although it doesn’t have that much power, people who install it on their desks or TV stands will likely benefit from this product because it is smaller, lighter, and has been improved in small details. If the good points of this product match your PS5 usage case, you may want to consider replacing it.

“PlayStation Portal Remote Player” is scheduled to be released on November 15th. The new PS5 is currently on sale.
