Currently, some Pixel 6 phone owners are complaining about defective smartphones after resetting their device to factory settings.

Why this is important: The latest phone to be affected by this issue is the Google Pixel 6a. It is only about two years old, so it will still have a few owners. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are also only three years old.

In detail: Reports of defective Pixel phones are piling up both in the Google support forum and in the Google Pixel subreddit. Specifically, they have three things in common:

  • Only owners of Pixel 6 phones are reporting the problem.
  • Those affected complain about defective devices after resetting the phone to factory settings.
  • No user has been able to solve the problem so far.

Some users who are not using a beta version of Android are also reporting the problem. So it seems to affect the stable versions as well. At the moment it is difficult to estimate how widespread the problem really is. The cause is still unclear.

How did Google react? Detlef M., a “Platinum Product Expert” in the Google Support Forum, stated that the Pixel team has been informed and is aware of the problem. They are currently investigating the issue.

»OF Tech« about the Google Support Forum: Guys, does anyone know how to fix this issue on Google Pixel 6? Yesterday I tried to do a factory reset and got an error message. After that I can't boot into the operating system and my device is OEM locked so far.

»Sadge Pixel«, replied to the post with: Just wanted to say I have the exact same problem. Tried to factory reset my phone yesterday and it was bricked.

»Keggyo« stated in the Google Pixel subreddit that he also has the problem.

But there are also reports of users who were able to reset their phone without any problems.
