Orange TV coming soon to Apple TV and Android TV without the need for a decoder

At the beginning of July, Orange should launch its “Orange TV” application on Android TV and tvOS (Apple), after several months of tests. Subscribers to the operator should finally be able to part with their TV boxes.

After Samsung televisions (under Tizen OS), it's the turn of televisions under Android TV and the Apple TV box to receive Orange television.

According to information fromiGenerationOrange will launch its application at the beginning of July Orange TV on Google and Apple platforms. Televisions and video projectors running Android TV, in addition to Apple TVs, will then be able to virtualize an Orange decoder, to access live channels and replay programs. A good opportunity to unplug your box, which can be transformed into a secondary decoder or simply sent back to the operator.

Orange TV without box: a free or paid option

In March 2024, Orange opened a test on its Le Lab platform. “You are an Orange TV customer and you are equipped with a smart TV running Android, an Android or Apple TV key or box… Discover the first features of the future application Orange Smart TV to access your content on the different screens in your home (or outside) without using the decoder »wrote the operator.

In the coming weeks, Orange should open its application to all of its subscribers. iGeneration, who was able to obtain images of the interface, revealed an Orange TV consistent with what the operator offers on its own boxes, with several navigation tabs. Android TV and tvOS will provide access to live channels (in 1080p) and free channel replay. Live control would also be included.

According to iGeneration, Orange TV on Smart TV will be free on high-end offers (which already include multi TV) and paid for on the most affordable offers (5 euros per month, since Orange considers its application as a secondary decoder) . Ultimately, we imagine that Orange will let its new subscribers choose between a physical decoder or access to the application, like Free.

Orange, Bouygues and Free: the gradual end of decoders

With its tvOS and Android TV application, Orange will join Free and Bouygues, which already offer this service on these two operating systems. Free is ahead since it covers all platforms, while SFR, absent from Android and Apple for the moment, focuses on Samsung and Hisense televisions.

In any case, the trend is the gradual disappearance of TV boxes. If the four operators should continue to manufacture them (a large part of the French public needs simple solutions provided by the operator), the youngest and most tech-savvy can now replace them with applications. The end of an era where the announcement of a Livebox or a Freebox interested millions of people.
