[Multi] Dolphin 5.0 celebrates its 5th anniversary and offers a new life cycle – News and updates posted on LS

The result of a long and difficult period of transition, the fundamental inaccuracies that had plagued Dolphin for over a decade were successfully corrected and Dolphin was now freed from its burdens to swim into a new era of precision and performance.

Eight years have passed since this great release of version 5.0, and we must admit that Dolphin has marked the history of emulation, just 8 years ago this legendary version was released.

Dolphin has been constantly updated, with new features and improvements, as well as bug fixes and stability improvements. Users can now upgrade without fear, knowing that even in the unlikely event of a bug, it will be fixed within hours. And of the thousands of titles that Dolphin can run, the number that don't work can now be counted on the fingers of one hand!

Today's announcement is simple, the team announces that they have just adopted a rolling release cycle, building on beta versions, new versions can receive fixes, so if problems arise, the team will release small updates instead of a new full version. And, of course, each release will progress the version number of Dolphin which will no longer be x.0, the first rolling release is available now: Dolphin 2407.

Here are the details of the new continuous broadcast system:

– The first two digits represent the year and the next two the month. 2407 codifies a release from July 2024.

– All subsequent development versions after a release will have numbers appended to it. For example, 144 commits after 2409 would result in development version 2409-144.

– The next version will be the 240X. Yes, it will be released in just a few months!

– Patch releases will have a suffix added. For example, a single patch for Dolphin 2409 would be “Dolphin 2409a”.

– Beta versions are replaced by released versions. All users of the beta version will be moved to the new released version.

On the agenda, a new logo, MayImilae, the creator of the previous logo and long-time editor and contributor to the Dolphin blog, refreshed the logo and commented on this evolution:

The Dolphin logo from 2013 was designed at the beginning of a transition. Dolphin was leaving its buggy past behind and committing to doing things right, even if it meant removing tons of working code. So the stupid mario peace sign went out and in its place I created a clean, bold, serious, and trendy logo to symbolize Dolphin's new future as a serious emulator. And yes, that's what got us here! However, Dolphin is more mature now. It's stable, confident, and comfortable in its environment. So for the refresh, I wanted to go back to the original design and make it timeless, but also more fun, more colorful, and a little softer and thicker. And finally, to address all the things that have bothered me for ten years.

The team then explains why they did not produce a version 6.0, a touching post that can be found here in its entirety: fr.dolphin-emu.org
