Japanese petition calls for game to be stopped

The upcoming “Assassin's Creed Shadows” is not only polarizing in this country. In Japan, players are now calling for the game to be discontinued with a petition.

Fans of the “Assassin's Creed” series have been waiting for a game set in feudal Japan for a long time. However, when the upcoming “Assassin's Creed Shadows” was revealed, the community was divided. The choice of characters, the Japanese shinobi Naoe and the African samurai Yasuketo play a role.

Now a petition has emerged from Japan demanding the immediate cancellation of “Assassin's Creed Shadows”. Over 30,000 signatures have now been collected, with concerns about “historical inaccuracies” among other things.

Petition denounces “Asian racism”

“Recently, a serious issue of historical accuracy and lack of cultural respect has been raised regarding the upcoming release of Assassin's Creed Shadows by game developer Ubisoft,” the petition's description reads. “The game is based on the Japanese samurai and ignores the fact that samurai are supposed to hold a higher rank in the samurai class and be gokemen, or servants of the nobility.”

“In fact, the first European to be given the title of samurai was William Adams (Miura Anjin), a 250 koku standard bearer in the service of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In this story, Ubisoft continues to misunderstand the nature and role of the samurai. This is a serious insult to Japanese culture and history and can be associated with Asian racism.”

“We call on Ubisoft to immediately stop the release of Assassin's Creed Shadows and show serious investigation and respect for Japanese history and culture. Your signature is required. Sign this petition to show Ubisoft the importance of cultural respect and historical accuracy.”

Japanese people are also annoyed by Yasuke

While the petition does not directly name the problem, the comments are more explicit. Some of the signatories are annoyed by the main character Yasuke. He is “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” portrayed as a fully-fledged, respected samurai, which is, however, rigorously rejected in the comments of the Japanese petition.

Yasuke is said to be based on a real historical figure. Yasuke, who originally came from Africa, is said to have served the warlord Oda Nobunaga. However, there is little information about the person. Some comments from Japanese players criticize this as a “false story” that is being spread abroad.

“Assassin's Creed Shadows” will be released on November 12, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
