Is the Newest PlayStation Studios Game a Game Changer? Early Reviews of Concord Suggest Yes!

After mixed reactions during the last State of Play, Concord, the FPS-hero shooter developed by Fiewalk and PlayStation, continues its path and the first feedback is positive. For our part, after three hours of play, we noted a solid experience with a varied cast of characters (there will be 16 at launch); exciting tactical perspectives; and even a universe that makes you want to play. For its part, PC Gamer believes that the title could become the “multiplayer success of the summer”, Eurogamer speaks of a mix of “brilliant games” and IGN, for its part, still raises some balancing issues. In the lot, there is also VGCwhich highlights the game-service nature of the project and the way in which the latter “innovates” in terms of storytelling.

A new cinematic every week

To summarize the situation for you, like any good game-as-a-service, Concord will see its content, its story evolve over the months and seasons… More precisely regarding the lore, the developers of Firewalk have focused on two points. The first is the Galactic Guide, an interactive map where the player can move a cursor and find a whole bunch of information about the title's universe. The other important point is THE Thumbnails2-minute cut-scenes which will come, each week and directly in the game, to tell the continuation of the adventures of the NorthStarthe crew at the heart of Concord. A two-stage strategy therefore and which, as VGC points out, is unlike any other service game.

“A more extreme approach”

“Fortnite (…) has produced large-scale cinematic trailers to coincide with its story arcs,” VGC writes. “Overwatch, outside of the intro cinematic and a few character trailers, (has opted) for breathless lines of dialogue and online articles (…) “Concord takes a much more extreme approach”. It remains to be seen whether Firewalk and PlayStation's strategy will please players. If you want to discover the title, know that a beta is planned on PS5 and PC – from July 12 to 14 for those who pre-ordered Concord and then from July 18 to 21 for everyone else… The title will be released immediately afterwards, on August 23, 2024.
