Is Baldur’s Gate 3 in Trouble? Developers Reflect on the Game’s Future

It is on the occasion of the conference “An Evening with Baldur's Gate 3” during the BAFTA ceremony, which Swen Vincke, CEO of development studio Larian, discussed at length about the game and the long-term support from the studio. “One of the most important things for us, and the one we're really working on now, is the ability for players to modify the game themselves”, before adding “I think this will be the moment where we say 'ok, now it's all yours'.“

He admits, however, that the teams haven't quite finished developing mod support yetand that he had been “hard to make this work”. However, once this is done, players will see Larian's support level will slowly decrease until critical bugs are fixed. And when Swen is asked if he's looking forward to this “final moment of transfer of power”, he responds with “Yes” categorically.

Early access, the future of the industry?

Swen Vincke continued the interview, explaining “already working on his new project” with his team and being “very enthusiastic” about the subjectbefore adding “we are creative minds, we don't want to keep doing the same thing, we really want to move towards new horizons”. The director of Larian then spoke about the importance that early access had on the creation of Baldur's Gate 3, suggesting a similar status for the studio's next project.

The most important thing that came out was that it allowed us to course correct. We were making mistakes and the players were telling us 'be careful, it's not right, you shouldn't do that'. If the boss of Larian “warmly recommend“early access, he admits that such a process inevitably makes development “quite long and perilous”, even risking tire the players and make them desert the title.
