In the long term, it should become the best publisher ever

In an interview, the Vice President of Amazon Games stated the goal of Amazon Games and explained the company strategy.

Vice President Christoph Hartmann has a big vision: He wants Amazon Games to become “the best games publisher in the long term” – or “at least one of the best publishers out there”.

According to his statement, Amazon is increasingly developing into an entertainment company. He then points to the success of Prime Video. Most recently, the video-on-demand provider delivered the “Fallout” series a real hit which has a positive effect on the Sales figures of the games The group also owns Audible, a provider of audio books and podcasts.

The last missing piece of the puzzle was video games, making them “really part of this larger entertainment family.”

What is the strategy regarding video games? Amazon has opted for a “long game” approach. Those in charge do not want to “go on a buying spree and simply collect studios”, but rather focus on internal and selected external games.

“Two, maybe three games” are to be released each year. A more regular rhythm than before is important, but the studios should not be overloaded. A total of eight games are in development.

Two promising ones are “Tomb Raider” and “The Lord of the Rings”. The releases “won’t happen tomorrow”, but they are also not “too far away”The most important thing is quality, which has to be at triple-A level. After all, the bar is set very high.

Amazon has also not been able to avoid layoffs. Last year there were two waves of layoffs, which meant that a total of around 280 employees had to pack their bags.

In return, the group founded a month ago the first development studio on European soil. The management is carried out by Cristian Pana, who previously worked at Ubisoft Romania.
