After a total of seven books, a film adaptation in eight parts and several games, a “Harry Potter” series announced. This confirmation came as part of the launch of Max. The streaming service belongs to Warner Bros. Discovery and will air in April 2023.

However, the provider is making a strategy change. Therefore, the series is changing from a Max original to an HBO original. The same change also affects the prequel to “It” called “Welcome to Derry”. This means that the streaming service is losing two major series that Warner prefers to bring to the pay-TV program. It is not yet clear whether “The Penguin”, which is due to be released in September, or “Dune: Prophecy” will also switch to HBO. According to insiders, both productions are still pending.

Even though “Harry Potter” and “Welcome to Derry” will no longer be released as Max Originals, they will also be available via stream on the same day and date as their linear premiere. However, this represents a departure from David Zaslav and the streaming service he oversees.

Also new author and director for Harry Potter

The duo Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod were brought in as writer and director for the production. Both had previously worked together on “Succession”. Before working on Jesse Armstrong's “Succession”, Gardiner was executive producer of the HBO and BBC fantasy co-production “His Dark Materials” and co-executive producer of AMC's “Killing Eve”. Mylod worked on “Game of Thrones” and “The Last of Us”, among others.

It was previously announced that Gardiner was in the finals for the big task of adapting “Harry Potter” into a series. She beat out Tom Moran and Kathleen Jordan and was awarded the contract. In the future, she will act as showrunner and executive producer. Mark Mylod will direct several episodes and also act as executive producer.

The series is scheduled to launch in 2026. The content will be strictly based on JK Rowling's original books. Of course, there will also be a new cast, as the actors in the films have long since grown out of the age of their roles.

Harry Potter is produced by Warner Bros Television and Rowling's Brontë Film and TV. The controversial author Rowling will also serve as executive producer, among others.
