The highly anticipated return of Shrek is a reality

While it made an entire generation laugh since the early 2000s until its fourth opus in 2010, the saga Shrek has been very silent over the last 15 years. However, many spectators have not forgotten her, far from it. Even today, the slightest extract from one of these films still has its effect, and many impatiently await the return of the most embittered ogre in the world. As if to keep fans waiting, Dreamworks still produced two films in the same universe dedicated to the character of Puss in Boots. If the first was very nice, it was especially the second which revived the hype around the kingdom of Fort Fort Lointain. Good news for all fans: Actor Eddie Murphy (who gives his voice to N in the original version) has confirmed the production of a fifth Shrek:

We started making Shrek (5, editor's note) 4 or 5 months ago. We recorded the first act, and we will do the rest this year, we will finish it.

It was during an interview with our colleagues at Collider that the American actor released the information. In full promotion for his film Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (fourth opus of this cult franchise), he wanted to return to his iconic role of the 2000s alongside the ogre and the princess. But in addition to confirming that Shrek 5 was in development, he also revealed a little surprise.

A spin-off is coming, and it will make people happy!

If you like the Shrek saga, you obviously like the character of Donkey. Although categorized as a secondary character, he occupies so much space each time he appears on screen that he is absolutely inseparable from the ogre and the rest of his troop. Whether in the original version thanks to Eddie Murphy or in the French version thanks to Med Hondo, his speech rate and his personality make him an absolutely iconic character that some would like to see even more of. Good news for the latter, sincea spin-off dedicated to Shrek's Donkey is also in the works! Again, it is Eddie Murphy himself who confirms this in the same interview:

Shrek is coming, and Donkey is going to get his own movie. We're going to do “Donkey” too. So we're going to do a Shrek, and we're going to do a Donkey movie.

15 years later, a new Shrek film is in preparation, but not only that! We didn’t see this other film coming…

Be careful though, the two should not arrive side by side, since they are not shot at the same time:

I started recording Shrek, I think it will be released in 2025, and we will make a Donkey movie after that.

You will have understood, the good news did not come alone for Shrek fans. In addition to the fifth opus already in preparation and planned for 2025, a film dedicated to the character of Donkey will also be in preparation subsequently. If you have never seen the original films in the saga, know that the first three are available on Amazon Prime Video and that the excellent Puss in Boots 2 (which does not require having seen the first) is present in the Netflix catalog. As for Shrek 4, it is not currently available on any SVOD platform, but some will say that it is not a big deal.
