Elden Ring as a film or series? An exciting idea, especially since the rich lore and the openly told story could offer many starting points for a film adaptation. And Fallout on Prime Video was not the first to show that video game adaptations can be good and successful.

The American author George RR Martin, who wrote the background story for Elden Ring, now comments on a possible film adaptation. And the post in his blog makes you sit up and take notice.

“I have nothing to say”

The post from June 29, 2024, is about, among other things, the Nebula Award, which has been honoring texts from the fields of fantasy and science fiction every year since 1966. In 2022, Martin and FromSoftware boss Hidetaka Miyazaki received the award for Elden Ring in the Game Writing category.

In his blog, which the author uses for official communication, Martin thanks once again all those who voted for him and Miyazaki back then and then writes:

Oh, and about the rumors you may have heard about the movie or series based on Elden Ring… I have nothing to say. Not a word, no, nothing, I know nothing, not a peep from me. What kind of rumor?

The fact that the American author reacted to the rumors and made a statement about the possible Elden Ring film adaptation in this way is already suspicious. A denial looks different.

Especially since Martin's books have now been and are being made into two series (Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon). You can see the trailer for the second season of House of the Dragon here:

A third series (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) is also in the starting blocks. FromSoftware boss Hidetaka Miyazaki also recently spoke out about a possible film adaptation. He said in a Interview with the Guardian:

I see no reason to turn down another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, for example a movie. But I don't think I or FromSoftware have the knowledge or ability to produce something in another medium. So that would require a very strong partner. We would have to build a lot of trust and agree on whatever we want to achieve, but the interest is definitely there.

While Martin makes it sound as if something concrete is already available, Miyazaki is quite reserved. It remains to be seen whether there will be further information on this topic in the near future.

Many fans of the Game of Thrones universe at least will throw their hands up in despair at the prospect of a new project from Martin. After all, many have been waiting for the sixth volume and thus a continuation of the series for years.

But it was only last fall that the American announced that The Winds of Winter was still in the works and far from finished. Release date: unknown.
