EA stops selling several games, but not on all platforms

Electronic Arts is pulling the plug on several “Battlefield” games – at least on old consoles. Digital sales are ending and online services are also being shut down.

Electronic Arts has announcedthat three “Battlefield” games will be removed from digital sale on July 31, 2024. However, this measure does not affect all platforms. Rather, the publisher is stopping the distribution of the games on the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms.

The games mentioned are “Battlefield 3”, “Battlefield 4” and “Battlefield: Hardline”. From that day onwards, they will no longer be offered digitally for the last-last-gen consoles. The same applies to the expansions.

The online services of the aforementioned shooters will be terminated on the affected platforms on November 7, 2024, so that “Battlefield 3”, “Battlefield 4” and “Battlefield: Hardline” will only offer limited functions on PS3 and Xbox 360. The single-player campaigns will still be playable.

But what about the other platforms?

Electronic Arts points out that “Battlefield 3”, “Battlefield 4” and “Battlefield: Hardline” will remain available on other platforms. This means that players who own “Battlefield 3” for the PC can continue to use this version without restrictions or persuade other players to buy it. The shooter is currently even available on Steam with a discount of 90 percent.

“Battlefield 4” and “Battlefield Hardline” will also remain and can be purchased or fully played for PS4, Xbox One and PC after the above dates. Today's announcement has no impact on these platforms. Only the versions for PS3 and Xbox 360 will have the aforementioned restrictions.

In a general statement on such measures, Electronic Arts points out that when older games are replaced by newer titles, the number of players who still play these older games decreases. Typically, this proportion is less than 1 percent of all online players of EA titles, which makes continued operation difficult.

“Battlefield 2042” is still the latest part of the series, but there will be no more seasons, as Electronic Arts admitted three months ago:

The next part of the “Battlefield” series has yet to be officially revealed. However, the most extensive team in the history of the series These include DICE, Motive Studios, Ripple Effect Studios and Criterion Games.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson described the next installment as an “outstanding live service,” while Details about the setting and game mechanics are not known.
