Classics from PS1 times return

The once popular “Fighting Force” series from the 90s will be making a comeback. Limited Games and Square Enix have entered into a cooperation for this project.

Two genuine beat 'em up classics will be making their way onto modern consoles and PCs next year. We're talking about “Fighting Force” and “Fighting Force 2”, which were released for PS1 and other platforms well over 20 years ago.

However, this is not a remake or a remaster. Instead, you can expect just a simple re-release – like Rockstar did with “Red Dead Redemption“ So there are unlikely to be any major improvements.

Limited Run Games, which has entered into a cooperation with Square Enix, is responsible for the re-release. In 2009, the latter video game company took over the publisher Eidos Interactive, which was responsible for the distribution of the two fighting games at the time.

Destroying things, getting weapons and beating people up

Who doesn't love a good brawler? In Fighting Force, you and up to two or three friends have a simple four-step strategy: destroy things, get weapons, use those weapons to beat people up, and repeat as needed. It's straightforward street carnage with a 3D flair, coming to your home in 2025 from Limited Run Games.

Limited Run Games’ description of the “Fighting Force Collection”

The first part was a classic beat 'em up in which you fight against tons of enemies in different levels. The game was first released in 1997 for the PC and the first PlayStation. Two years later, a version for the Nintendo 64 followed. The co-op mode was particularly fun, as it allowed you to fight together with a friend.

Part two, however, was less of a brawler and more of an action-adventure. There was no multiplayer component here. In fact, the sequel was received much worse than its predecessor.

Both fighting games were created by Core Design. This British game studio was taken over by Rebellion Developments in 2006. The company is the developer of the “Sniper Elite” series.

The collection will be released in 2025 for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. Both a digital and a physical edition are planned. Only the Xbox is left out. Further information will follow in the said year.
