Since its announcement, Assassin's Creed Shadows has made a lot of noise for various reasons. While some criticisms simply concern the gameplay or the structure of the game, debates are lively because of Yasuke, one of the two protagonists of this new opus. Some Japanese players have even signed a petition to have the game canceled.

Japanese gamers sign petition to cancel Assassin's Creed Shadows

This petition started by Shimizu Toru two weeks ago has managed to collect 29,543 signatures at the time of writing. It is only in the last few hours that it has really made headlines, since 12,651 people have signed it today, almost reaching the 35,000 signatures requested.

But what specifically motivated Shimizu Toru to launch this petition? He accuses Ubisoft of a serious problem of historical accuracy and a lack of cultural respect, particularly concerning the treatment of the role of the samurai.

The game is based on Japanese samurai and ignores the fact that samurai were a higher class of warriors and should have been “gokenin” or servants of nobles. In fact, the first European to be given the title of samurai, William Adams (Miura Anjin), served Tokugawa Ieyasu as a 250 koku hatamoto. In this story, Ubisoft continues to misunderstand the nature and role of the samurai. This is a serious insult to Japanese culture and history, which can also be linked to Asian racism. We call on Ubisoft to immediately cancel the release of “Assassin's Creed Shadows” and show sincere research and respect for Japanese history and culture. We need your signature. Sign this petition to let Ubisoft know the importance of cultural respect and historical accuracy.

It is obvious that Ubisoft will not cancel the game under pressure from a few thousand players when it will surely sell several million copies. It should also be noted that among the signatories, not all are Japanese.

In any case, Assassin's Creed Shadows will be available from November 15, 2024 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
