Grand Theft Auto in the cinema? Actually, it's a no-brainer when you consider the huge success of video game brands on the big screen. Sonic the Hedgehog has already broken box office records twice, and a third film is just around the corner. Super Mario has now with a comeback in Hollywood followed suit.
TV series like The Last of Us or Netflix projects like Arcane confirm the trend. However, the fan community is waiting in vain for a GTA film. But why is that? In the past, Hollywood seems to have been interested in the Rockstar brand.

When is GTA 6 coming out?
As of now, the Release of GTA 6 in focus. Although we know that the game is due to be released in 2025, Rockstar has not yet announced an exact date. The headlines surrounding the most anticipated game of recent years are currently being joined by an interview with Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser.
Finally, in a conversation with The Ankler, he discusses why there was no GTA film at the time. There was certainly interest from Hollywood, but other aspects stood in the way of the idea.
No GTA in the cinema?
After a few meetings, Houser was left wondering why anyone would agree to such an undertaking.Because you can make a film“, was probably the answer. “And we just said, no, what you're describing is that you're making a film and we have no control and we're taking a huge risk and we end up having to pay for it.“

The producer explains that Hollywood had hoped that the airs and graces of the film world would be enough.We had a multi-billion dollar brand from our perspective and it just didn't make economic sense. The risk never made sense. The assumption at the time was that video games would make bad movies.”

But from Houser's perspective, times are different now. Whether we will one day see the flagship brand from the Rockstar universe as a feature film remains to be seen. But the success of numerous projects such as Sonic or Mario has certainly not gone unnoticed by the company.
