Warner Bros. Discovery Revises Plans
For several years now, Warner Bros. Discovery has been banking on Max, its streaming platform offered since 2020 which brings together all of the group's best programs, including HBO series. The platform ended up expanding to Europe before finally being available in France since June 11.
It is on this platform that the group offers Game of Thrones, The Last of Us and House of the Dragon, while season 2 is currently being broadcast.
In the future, Warner Bros. Discovery will offer all of its content on this platform. But while Max was meant to mark a new era, a last-minute change by the company calls into question the platform's importance.
A surprising name change
According to DeadlineWarner Bros. Discovery has reportedly decided to change its strategy and brand its most ambitious programs with a new seal. While previously these projects were to be branded “Max Originals”, they will now be grouped under the umbrella of “HBO Originals”, marking a clear divide within these productions. This will be the case, for example, for the next Harry Potter series.
As our colleagues at Widescreenthis strategy is rather strange given the “rebranding“of Max which was previously called “HBO Max”. And this is all the more surprising after the statements of the CEO of the group David Zaslav who declared during this name change in 2023: “This is a real moment for us… This is our time. This is our chance and everything is possible. I feel like, for our company, this is our date with destiny.“. Warner Bros. Discovery therefore seemed to bet big on Max before backpedaling.
That said, it's possible that the company is making this change for several reasons. First, Warner Bros. Discovery would have seen fit to bet more on HBO, which is a much more evocative brand than Max, even abroad where the channel is unavailable. What's more, this change indicates that these programs will also be broadcast on television, but the company could also reserve “Max Originals” productions for its streaming platform.
